How to forward your business number to an answering service
Keep the number on the truck. Forward after hours, on overflow, or always-on to an AI receptionist. How call forwarding works, what to test first, and what should happen on the call.
You do not need a new phone system to put an answering service on the line. You keep the number already on the truck, the yard sign, and the Google listing. Your carrier forwards the call. Elody picks it up.
That is call forwarding. It is how after-hours coverage has worked for decades. The difference is what answers on the other end.
You keep the number
The caller dials the same digits they always did. Nothing on the van door changes. Nothing in the listing changes. You are not porting the line and you are not explaining a second brand.
You can also buy a number through Elody and put that on a new ad while you test. Same receptionist. Forwarding is the usual path because the number people already have is the one that rings.
Three ways businesses actually forward
After hours. Forward when you close. Nights, weekends, holidays. You still answer during the day. This is the common first setup. See after-hours answering service.
Overflow. Forward when a call is unanswered or the line is busy. You pick up when you can. Elody takes the one you can’t, which is usually the one that would have gone to voicemail while you were on a roof. See overflow answering service.
Always-on. Every inbound call goes to Elody. Ads and signs stop dumping into a beep. You still get the notes. Emergencies still ring the on-call phone you set. See AI receptionist.
These are forwarding choices, not three products. One plan. You change when it picks up.
What to do before you flip it
Call the Elody number first. Hear your greeting. Ask it to book a dummy visit. Say an emergency word and confirm your on-call phone rings. Then turn forwarding on.
If you forward first and the greeting is still the factory default, you find out from a real customer. Test the receptionist, then point your business number at it.
We help you get the forward on. Your carrier already has the setting. Some businesses use the desk phone. Some use the cell that is the business line. Some use a VoIP account. The job is the same: unanswered, after hours, or all calls, send them to Elody.
What should happen once a call forwards
It picks up in a natural voice, in your greeting.
It takes the job. Name, number, address, what they need.
If they want a visit, it books the window you publish and puts it on your calendar.
If they say burst pipe, no heat, sparking, or whatever you marked urgent, it rings the on-call phone and texts you the address.
When they hang up you get a text and an email. Transcript, summary, outcome.
If the forward only produces a callback list in the morning, you paid for voicemail with extra steps. What an AI receptionist should do is the checklist.
After hours vs a night operator
Live answering services often charge extra overnight because a person costs extra overnight. Forwarding to Elody is the same plan at 2 AM as at noon. Minutes are minutes. No night surcharge.
If you only forward when you close, you use fewer minutes than an always-on business. You still catch the leak that calls after dinner.
Spanish on the same forward
The greeting is English. If they start in Spanish, Elody continues in Spanish. You get the notes in English. No keypad, no second number. Bilingual answering is the same line you already forwarded.
If a call still hits voicemail
The receptionist is probably live and the carrier is not sending the call yet. Call the Elody number directly. If that works, the forward on the advertised line is the gap. Check the hours on an after-hours rule, or whether unanswered forwarding waits too long and the caller hung up.
